The address of a website is its domain name. The address of a company is specified within a website. Therefore, by extension one can say that a business's address is the domain name!

Well yes, that is a bit far-fetched but it is true if one were to look deeper into the whole point of having a website! The website of the company is what consumers these days seek in an advertisement and the email is the way they usually establish contact. Hence, the first recognizing feature of any business these days would be its website. However, the task of choosing a domain name that would instantly provide the brand with a trademark-like symbolism is a tedious one. This has become especially arduous since most names that one would think as apt for the website would already have been registered by somebody else. Here are some tips on selecting the right domain name for your website.

The name

One should aspire for a domain name that is catchy. However, this does not mean that one should be overenthusiastic and name the website kingofzorkaland.com for that is not catchy; it is irritating and one that would drive away traffic from the website. Simple names are often catchy. Steve Jobs once remarked, "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." This is true not only in the case of technology but also when naming a domain! This might seem difficult considering that there are plenty of common simple names but hardly any of them ever seem to fit the description of the website. Keep an open mind and allow inspiration to take over.

Uniqueness

By default, every domain name that gets registered on the Whois register which is the official record-keeper of domain names is unique. However, users don't pay attention to detail. This is apparent when someone types in "flicker.com" instead of "flickr.com" and gets directed to an unrelated site. Uniqueness can be maintained by buying like-named domain names and re-routing them to the real website. Another way would be to invent a word. Google was never a word until Larry Page and Sergey Brin thought it would be a good name for their site. It was derived from the mathematical number of googol.

Domain

Some of the common domains in use are .com, .gov, .org and the like. Apart from these there are many top level domains too that one could choose from. Even countries have their own unique domain such as .in for India, .pk for Pakistan, .ca for Canada and the like. Most people think that .com would be the default address and type that in anyway. Hence your preference would be for .com but go for the rest only if you think that the domain name that you have come up with is indispensable for your cause.

Next, the registration process is set into motion by authorized registrars. They are not very difficult to find as being a registrar is one of the most profitable businesses in this age of information technology. After registration, one must seek to host the website onto a server of the registrar itself or another party. Once this is done, you are now good to go on to designing the website and uploading it to the world audience.
