You have been living under a rock for the past few years, you must have heard about instant messaging and how it has changed the world of communications over the Internet. Instant Messaging is a service that alerts users when their friends or colleagues are on line and allows them to communicate in real time through private online chat areas. Two of the most popular IM services are AOL instant messenger (AIM) and MSN messenger. Unfortunately, most of the publicly available servers use proprietary protocols that only allow you to communicate with users on the same system. These systems are not compatible with each other and can't be accessed from other clients.

Jabber Server is an open source implementation of the IM server that aims to change this. It uses streaming XML protocols that are free, open, and public. These protocols have been formalized by the Internet Engineering Task Force as the approved instant messaging and presence technology under the name of XMPP. The Jabber technologies used on thousands of servers world-wide to enable millions of users to communicate with each other.

The biggest advantage of the Jabber Server when compared with commercial IM servers is that, since it is open source, anyone can run a Jabber server and it can be restricted to a specific community like a company work force or a group of friends. A basic jabber server that allows users to register themselves and chat with each other. However, if we want to have the ability to create chat rooms, we need to install some additional software called mu-conference. We will cover the installation of mu-conference momentarily.
Jabber Server is the only widely deployed and used instant messaging protocol on the internet. Through it you can have as many users as you want without paying for it. You also get the complete server for free. There is no commercial plug-in you have to buy to get all the features. Jabber Server is modular while you can just install the whole package as it is and it will work, you can also separate it into different processes that can even run on different servers. If you need, you can also cluster these components to get more fault tolerance and get more performance.

An Xmpp Server provides basic messaging, presence, and XML routing features. Xmpp Server was designed for real-time communication, which powers a wide range of applications including instant messaging, presence, media negotiation, white boarding, collaboration, lightweight middleware, content syndication.

When the application is installed, the Web meeting hosts can easily access chat rooms hosted on an Xmpp Server by launching the extension within the "Share" during the Web meeting, then connecting on the server and selecting a conference room to sign up. Xmpp (the Internet Standard extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) is being used for mission critical communication, where reliability is essential. Although use of Xmpp can seem very reliable, a basic Xmpp system has characteristics that are not reliable in some situations.

Xmpp Clustering is where multiple servers support the same XMPP domain, so that any of the set of cluster servers can handle the domain. When an Xmpp Server crashes, messages will generally be lost. Xmpp servers, unlike message switches, do not write messages to permanent storage before sending them on much like an IP router. It is desirable that Xmpp Server switch high volumes of messages very quickly, so this is an architectural decision.
